Chapter Five

Sita lay awake most of the night worrying about Wilfrid Blunt and at the same time terrified in case one of the people who had been killed in the bazaar was her friend.

And yet, something told her that if he was dead she would have known it and she was sure with an instinct that could not be denied that he was alive.

She lay there in the dark calling to him for help and feeling because he had been so positive that they could communicate with each other in that way and that he would hear her.

Almost as soon as the sun brightened the sky, she rose and was dressed long before the horses were waiting for her outside.

She wrote a note for her uncle to say that she had gone riding and then after a quick breakfast she ran to the side door with an eagerness that she would not suppress.

But she was well aware that she would be hurrying to the third tomb where she had met her friend before.

Because she was excited at the thought of seeing him and was confident that he would be there at her first glimpse the gardens with their colourful flowers seemed even lovelier than before and she quickly dismounted.

As she walked up the steps to the first tomb, she saw her escort take the horses as they had done before under the shade of a tree.

Because she had no wish for them to think that she was doing anything unusual, she passed through the first tomb and the second.

Then with a light in her eyes that her Indian friend would have recognised as being the same as when she had looked up at the stars, she hurried to the third where he had been waiting for her.

Because she had been so certain that he
